Chamundi Hill is one of the major landmark tourist attractions of Mysore. The Chamundeeswari temple is perched on a hill in the neighborhood of Mysore and is accessed through a surface road. Chamundeeswari the protective deity of the Mysore Maharajas has been held in respect for centuries, and the Wodeyars of Mysore have made wide contributions to this shrine.

A flight of one thousand steps constructed by the Maharaja Dodda Devaraja takes up to the summit of the hill which commands a height of about 3000 feet. Many Sanskrit verses along with the Nakshatramalika jewel has been inscribed in the temple tower.

The original shrine of the temple dates back to the 16 th Century. Chamunda Hill has been related with the Hoysala ruler.

The temple is dedicated to Chamundeeswari or Durga symbolizing the fierce form of Shakti who bested the evil demon Mahishasuran. A vibrant image of the demon greets the tourists as they climb up the summit.

The temple also houses several images of Nandi (the bull mount of Shiva). The admired of these is the colossal Nandi on the 800th step on the hill. This Nandi is over 15 feet high and 24 feet long. It was shaped during the reign of Dodda Devaraja.

The temple also features shrines dedicated to Shiva - Mahabaleshwar (endorsed to Vishnu Vardhana the Hoysala ruler of the 12th century CE) and Lakshmi Narayana - Vishnu on this hill.
