About Hampi

Hampi is situated in the central part of the state of Karnataka, in the southern part of India. Hampi was once the glorious resources of mighty Vijayanagara Empire (1336-1565), from the Deccan Plateau to the tip of the Peninsula. Founded in the middle of the 14th century by two local princes, Hukka & Bukka, the Vijayanagara Empire came to be famous for its might and wealth and as an attraction of imperial magnificence.

Tourist Attractions in Hampi

Vittal Temple
Two kilometers east of Hampi Bazaar, the explorer can see the Vittal Temple, built in the 16th century, and now a World Heritage monument. The carvings on this temple give an imminent into the architectural splendor achieved by the artisans of Vijayanagar Empire.

Ugra Narasimha
The 6.7 m tall monolith of Ugra Narasimha is worth seeing. The huge picture is situated in the south of the Hemkuta group of temples that contains the Virupaksha Temple. The Narasimha is a seated four-armed figure under a covering of a seven-hooded snake.

Hazara Rama Temple
The Hazara Rama Temple was perhaps the king's private shrine and contains some excellent carvings and murals both within and on the outer walls. The outer friezes show horses, elephants, dancing girls and infantry in parade, while the inner panels depict person deities or scenes from the Ramayana.

Queen's Bath
The most involved of the bathhouses is the 'Queen's bath' lying in the castle area, south of the Hazara Rama temple. The building is a great square structure, noteworthy for its different plain exterior and the very ornate interior.

Getting There
Air : The nearest air station at Tornagallu in Sandur Taluk which is 32 kms. from Hospet. The second nearest airport is Bellary(74 kms). Other convenient airports are at Belgaum (190 kms) and Bangalore(353 kms).
Rail: Hospet is the nearest rail head (13 kms). Hospet is linked by rail to Bangalore, Bijapur,Hubli and Guntakal.
Road: Hampi is 350 kms from Bangalore. KSRTC Buses ply regularly from Hospet.
