About Mathura
Mathura is one of the most antique cities of India and is one of the holiest of religious places in the Hindu mythology. Located at the bank of river Yamuna in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Mathura is one of the famous destinations of pilgrimage.
History of Mathura
The origin of Mathura is ancient. It is said to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the popular living form of Lord Vishnu. Mathura and the area about it, including Vrindavan, are linked with the childhood exploits of Lord Krishna. It is mentioned in the ancient Indian epic of Mahabharata. It later became a part of the Mauryan Empire.
Tourist Attractions in Mathura
Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi - This place is famous as the birth place of Lord Krishna. It is generally believed that Lord Krishna was born in the prison of King Kansa about 5000 years ago. Many old statues were unearthed from this place that is at present housed in a museum.
Dwarkadheesh Temple - The Dwarkadheesh Temple can be traced back to the first section of the nineteenth century. This temple is the leader temple of the town and its significance is felt during such partying as Holi, Janmashtami and Diwali.
Vrindavan
Situated 12kms north of Mathura, Vrindavan attracts a significant number of pilgrims. This is where Krishna indulged in his young person pranks with the gopis.
