While you are visiting Srirangapatna which is
located about 16 km from Mysore in Karnataka, you will witness
experiences of past. In this quaint little ancient town the most
conspicuous landscape is Srirangapatna Fort. The ramparts of the
Srirangapatna Fort are a live example of those historic battles
which were fought over here. Of those various battles the most
significant battle that holds importance is Tipu Sultan's struggle
against the British. However, this epic battle ended in his death in
1799.
Within the historic Srirangapatna Fort you will find a Mosque and
the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is huge
temple. It has an impressive gopuram and fort like walls. It boasts
of a blend of the architectural styles of Hoysala and Vijayanagar.
Swami Ranganatha in the temple is projected as reclining on the bed
of Aadi Sesha. Not only this, in this temple you will also find
images of Gowtama muni and the river Kaveri. Besides, in the
northwest corner of the temple Ranganayaki Thaayaar is enshrined.
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple also houses a shrine to Lord Krishna. In
fact to observe the Alwars and the Acharyas of the Sri Vaishnava
traditions this temple is an ideal location in the fort. Apart from
all these, images of Srinivasa and Panchamukha Anjaneya said to have
been set by Vyasaraya are also found. Above all the Chaturvimsati
pillars in front of the inner entrance bearing carvings of 24 forms
of Vishnu is most enticing.
