Hampi the city of ruins was the seat of
Vijayanagar Empire in ancient times. After the destruction of
Vijayanagar Empire by raiding Mogul invaders, the city was reduced
to ruins amid scenes of savage massacre and horrors. However, once
the vaunter of riches this capital city is now singing songs of
ruins. The ruins of Hampi of the 14 th century are spread over 26

km. area. It can be said that being protected by
raging river Tungabhadra in the north and rocky granite ridges on
the other three sides, the ruins of Hampi sings the glory of
fabulous wealth. Besides, this city of ruins is very popular for
monuments in Karnataka . And of the various monuments the Ugra
Narasimha Statue Hampi holds real importance.
Ugra Narasimha Statue is located to the south of Hampi. It is a
massive rock idol that was cut to from the image of Narasimha. This
idol projects the fierce aspect of Lord Vishnu. It is a 6.7 m. high
statue. Initially, in the statue there was a smaller image of
Lakshmi on one knee of the Lord Vishnu. However, due to the massacre
this probably has fallen off.
The Ugra Narasimha Statue Hampi depicts Narasimha as seated on the
coils of Shesha Naga. This statue contains the seven heads of Shesha
Naga arching over Narasimha to form a canopy.
This finest example of sculpture in Hampi projecting God in half
Lion and half Man incarnation still looks timeless because of its
fantastic architecture. However, in recent times the Ugra Narasimha
Statue Hampi was restored. And in this restoration process a granite
strap was added between the lord's knees to stabilize it.
