Udaipur is known as the Venice of the east. It is also recognized as the "City of Palaces",
a "Fairyland" a "Vision in Dream" and also City of Lakes. Udaipur is the jewel of Mewar - a kingdom ruled by the Sisodia period for 1200 years. The foundation of the city has an attractive legend associated with it. It is enclosed by hills, mountains, and its good-looking palaces are mirrored in the calm blue water of Lake Pichola. Udaipur, as the capital of Mewar, was created by Maharana Udai Singh in 1568. The legends says that Udai Singh was guided by a holy man meditating on the hill near Pichola Lake to create his capital on this very spot. The lakeside city was built on a small wooded plain encircled by mountains, which was in direct difference to the masculinity of Chittor and Kumbhalgarh.

Eklingji and Nagda in Udaipur :
20km northeast of Udaipur is situated the ruined remnants of
the ancient capital of Mewar, Nagda, dating back to the 6th
century AD. A couple of kilometers away is the famous temple
complex of Eklingji. Most of the buildings at Nagda are in
ruins. But there still survives a majestic pair of 10th
century Vaishnavite temples, known as Saas-Bahu - literally
"Mother-in-law" and "Daughter-in-law".
Built in 734 A.D. the temple complex of Eklingji contains
108 temples within its enclosure. The shrines are dedicated
to the presiding deity of Mewar, Eklingji, an aspect of
Shiva.
